VW T3 – buyers guide and weak points (part 2)

VW T3 Westfalia 4x4

The second part will focus on the exterior features of the bodywork. We also want to show the signs of major construction sites/work. We will start with the side panels and then move on to the rear, floor and roof.

VW T3 – The most important weak points

One of the most important points on the VW T3 are the joints. All joints in the outer skin give an indication of where rust is hiding and how badly the underlying layer is affected. Minimal rust infestation can still be dealt with, small cracks in the paintwork near the joints are less of a concern. However, as soon as the adjacent sealant is cracked, a lot of repair work becomes necessary. For this reason, you should take a closer look at joints and gaps!

After examining the joints, sooner or later you will end up at the tank filler neck. As a popular rust victim, it may be necessary to replace the entire wheel arch to achieve a lasting result.

This Bulli (above) is the absolute opposite of joint rust. Despite the differences in colour, the joints are intact.

VW T3 exterior and underbody

The underbody of every T3 should be inspected, the condition is an indication of what repair work is waiting. The entrance was already mentioned in the first part. The Bulli is actually very rust-resistant. The tank is a big drawback, as it rusts easily. There are also problems at the exhaust, thin layers of paint and heat offer potential for attack.

The jacking point of the underbody should not be overlooked; it is of enormous importance in preventing costly repair work. There are many different types of roof for the van. However, the rain gutter is important as a drain for rainwater. It should be rust-free at the beginning and end.

VW T3 – Other weak points

On bodies with a high roof, the adjacent seal is usually cracked and should be checked to see if water can penetrate. With sliding doors, the lower, front area is particularly at risk. Splash water and stone chips have an effect here.

This picture once again shows exactly where the rust has started on the sliding door. The joint on the right is also affected by rust.

VW T3 – Conclusion and purchase recommendation

The VW T3 was a rust-resistant vehicle in its day. Today’s condition depends above all on the care and attention of the owner. Regardless of its condition, the Bulli will always be a winner of hearts due to its timeless design and versatile usability. Whether as a camper, 4WD (Synchro) or Caravelle. All Bullis are timeless and increasingly sought-after classic cars with appreciation potential.

From our side, a clear buy recommendation for all those who are looking for a VW bus with vintage charm, but are not willing to spend the horrendous prices for VW T1 or T2. Vehicles with a good body, a well-maintained engine and a well-kept interior are becoming rarer and rarer and their prices are constantly rising.

So you should secure a good bus in time, before it is too late !
