VW T3 – buyers guide and weak points (part 1)

VW T3 Doka

As lovers of oldies, we dedicate this article to an absolute cult vehicle – the VW T3. With its countless variants, popular as a motorhome, the focus of this article is on the weak points of the bodywork. This article is for anyone who wants to buy a bus. Which spare parts are available and which projects we already had for the T3, you can read in our blog Reconstruction roof hatch VW T3 Bus Camper.

When the VW T3 Bus came onto the market, everything that could be done in terms of workmanship and rust prevention had been done. By now, the buses are getting on in years and need appropriate refinishing. Of course, refinishing varies with the condition of the vehicle. So the history is all the more important.

Front area of the VW T3

Special attention should be paid to the windscreen rubber. As soon as a hilly landscape of rust bubbles appears underneath the rubber, it is highly likely that the windscreen frame has rusted through. The rainwater penetrates, remains there for a longer period of time and starts the corrosion process. If the footwell is also damp, one can assume advanced rust infestation. The inner panel on the dashboard is most likely affected, the rainwater then runs into the floor.

On the lower part, it is particularly important to check the folds and seams. The fold behind the bumper often blooms like a meadow of tulips. If this is the case, you should consider replacing the lower front mask.

VW T3 – Entry and interior

On both doors, the door sill mats should be checked. Underneath the mat is the result of many years of moisture accumulation. The folds are often affected here.Under the floor mats should also be checked for rust, as on the lower door edges. Everything should be dry, if oil or other liquids are present, then it indicates defective aggregates. This procedure applies to the driver’s and passenger’s side. In the interior itself, look for weak points on the floor panel. Camper conversions with refrigerators are a particular problem.

Condensation accumulates behind the refrigerator and cupboards, and in the long run the side wall is considerably affected. The accumulation of condensation on the central floor generally causes nasty surprises; an examination of the underbody can be revealing. In general, look behind the refrigerator for corrosion of the metal sheets.

VW T3 – Safety aspects

A critical starting point for rust is the seat belt bolting. This point is difficult to check because a carpet is glued to it. Nevertheless, you should feel carefully here and check whether the screw connection is still intact. New repair plates are available in the shops for a good price. As is well known, safety has priority! The belt mounts of the rear seat should also be checked. Splash water promotes rust and restricts the function. You can read about the weaknesses in the exterior and rear sections in the second part of the VW T3 buying guide.

Until then, we wish you a safe journey and rust-free vehicles!
